Washing Machine Not Spinning? 6 Reasons & Solutions
When a washing machine stops spinning, clothes emerge soaking wet — forcing you to either wring them out by hand or re-run the machine. Here's a systematic guide to diagnosing why your machine won't spin.
1. Unbalanced or Overloaded Drum
The most common (and easiest to fix) cause. Modern machines have sensors that stop the spin cycle if the load is unbalanced to prevent damage.
Fix: Reduce the load by 30%, redistribute clothes evenly, and restart the spin cycle.
2. Lid Switch / Door Lock Failure
The machine won't spin if it thinks the door is open. A faulty lid switch (top load) or door latch (front load) prevents the spin cycle from engaging.
Fix: Listen for the "click" of the door locking. If absent, the switch or latch needs replacement (₹300–₹900).
3. Worn or Broken Drive Belt
The drive belt connects the motor to the drum. A worn, slipped, or snapped belt means the motor runs but the drum doesn't move.
Fix: Belt replacement is a standard repair — ₹400–₹1,200 including parts and labour in Bangalore.
4. Faulty Motor or Brushes
Carbon brushes in the motor wear down over time. When worn too low, the motor loses power and can't sustain spin speeds.
Fix: Brush replacement is cost-effective (₹600–₹1,500). Full motor replacement costs more (₹2,000–₹5,000).
5. Control Board / PCB Issue
If the motor and belt are fine but spin still doesn't work, the PCB may not be sending the spin signal.
Fix: PCB diagnosis and repair/replacement by a technician.
6. Shock Absorbers / Suspension Failure
Worn suspension rods or shock absorbers cause excessive vibration, triggering the machine's safety mechanism to abort spin.
Fix: Shock absorber replacement (₹600–₹2,000).
Quick Diagnostic Checklist
- Is the load balanced and not overloaded?
- Does the door lock properly?
- Do you hear the motor running during spin attempts?
- Is the machine vibrating excessively?
