Washing Machine Smell — Why It Smells Bad & How to Fix It
A washing machine that smells bad transfers that smell to your clothes — defeating the entire purpose of washing them. This is a very common problem in Bangalore, especially in humid months. Here's the complete guide to eliminating washing machine odour.
Why Does It Smell?
The smell comes from a combination of:
- Mould and mildew — growing on the door gasket, drum, and detergent drawer
- Biofilm — a layer of bacteria that builds up in the drum and drain pipe
- Detergent residue — undissolved detergent provides food for bacteria
- Hard water deposits — Bangalore's mineral-rich water creates a breeding ground
- Blocked drain hose — stagnant water sitting in the hose or pump
Immediate Fix — Hot Vinegar Wash
- Add 2 cups of white vinegar to the drum
- Run the longest, hottest cycle available (or "Tub Clean" if your machine has it)
- When complete, add ½ cup of baking soda to the drum
- Run another hot cycle
- Wipe the drum dry with a clean cloth
Clean the Door Gasket (Front Load)
Pull back the rubber gasket folds and inspect for black mould. Clean with a solution of 1 part bleach to 4 parts water using an old toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly. For severe mould, the gasket may need replacement (₹900–₹2,500).
Clean the Detergent Drawer
Remove the drawer and soak for 30 minutes in hot water with a bleach tablet. Clean the cavity with a bottle brush. The black sludge here is a major odour source.
Clean the Pump Filter
A partially blocked filter traps organic matter that decomposes. Clean it every 2–3 months.
Prevention
- Always leave the door ajar after washing
- Remove clothes within 30 minutes of cycle completion
- Use the correct amount of detergent — excess causes most odour issues
- Run a monthly hot cycle with a cleaning tablet
If the odour persists after following all the above, there may be a drain hose or pump issue — residual standing water that needs to be physically removed. Call 7411225242 for a professional service and deep-clean.
