How to Clean a Washing Machine — Complete Guide for Bangalore Homes
Ironically, washing machines get dirty. Detergent residue, hard water deposits, lint, and bacteria build up over time — causing bad odours, mould, and reduced washing performance. Here's how to clean yours properly.
How Often Should You Clean a Washing Machine?
- Drum clean cycle: Once a month
- Pump filter: Every 2–3 months
- Detergent drawer: Every month
- Door gasket (front load): Weekly wipe, deep clean monthly
- Water inlet filter: Every 6 months
Step 1: Clean the Drum
Run an empty hot wash cycle with 2 cups of white vinegar or a dedicated washing machine cleaner. This dissolves soap scum and kills bacteria. If your machine has a "tub clean" cycle, use that. For Bangalore's hard water, add a descaling tablet monthly.
Step 2: Clean the Door Gasket (Front Load)
The rubber seal around the door is a mould hotspot. Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with water to form a paste. Apply to the gasket folds, leave for 10 minutes, then wipe thoroughly with a cloth. After every wash, leave the door ajar to let it dry.
Step 3: Clean the Detergent Drawer
Remove the drawer completely (press the tab and pull). Soak in warm water for 20 minutes and scrub with an old toothbrush. Clean the cavity too — black mould often hides here.
Step 4: Clean the Pump Filter
Locate the access panel (usually front-bottom). Place a towel and shallow tray to catch water. Slowly unscrew the filter, remove debris, and rinse under running water. Reinstall firmly.
Step 5: Clean the Inlet Hose Filter
Turn off the water supply. Disconnect the inlet hose from the machine. Use pliers to remove the small mesh filter and rinse it. Bangalore's water supply often deposits sediment here, reducing fill speed.
Preventing Future Build-Up
- Use the correct amount of detergent — more is not better
- Use HE (high-efficiency) detergent for front-load machines
- Always remove clothes promptly after the cycle ends
- Leave the door/lid open after each wash
