10 Washing Machine Maintenance Tips to Prevent Costly Repairs
In our years of servicing washing machines across Bangalore, we've noticed a clear pattern: the machines that break down most frequently are the ones that receive zero maintenance. Here are 10 simple habits that can dramatically extend your machine's life.
1. Clean the Pump Filter Every 2–3 Months
This is the single most impactful maintenance task. A blocked pump filter is the cause of a large proportion of drain-related repair calls. It takes 5 minutes and requires no tools.
2. Run a Monthly Drum Clean Cycle
Use a dedicated washing machine cleaner or 2 cups of white vinegar. This removes detergent residue, bacteria, and hard water deposits. Bangalore's hard water makes this especially important.
3. Use the Correct Amount of Detergent
More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes. Excess detergent creates foam that deposits on the drum, pipes, and pump — causing residue on clothes and eventual blockages. Follow the detergent manufacturer's guidelines strictly.
4. Use HE Detergent for Front-Load Machines
Front-load machines require Low-Suds or HE (High Efficiency) detergent. Using regular detergent creates excessive foam that can trigger the machine's overflow protection and damage the pump.
5. Don't Overload the Machine
Overloading causes premature wear on bearings, the motor, drive belt, and suspension system. Leave a hand's width of space at the top of the drum for top-loaders, and don't pack items tightly in front-loaders.
6. Leave the Door Open After Each Wash
This is critical for front-load machines. Leaving the door closed traps moisture, leading to mould growth on the door gasket within weeks in Bangalore's humid climate.
7. Clean the Detergent Drawer Monthly
Remove the drawer and soak in warm water. Clean the cavity with an old toothbrush. Black mould in the drawer cavity is a common cause of musty-smelling clothes.
8. Check Inlet Hose Connections Annually
Rubber washers inside inlet hose fittings harden and crack over time. Check them annually and replace if they look worn — a ₹50 fix that prevents significant water damage.
9. Level the Machine Correctly
An unlevel machine vibrates more, wearing out shock absorbers and bearings faster. Use a spirit level and adjust the machine's feet. All four feet should make solid contact with the floor.
10. Install a Voltage Stabiliser
Voltage fluctuations are common in many Bangalore areas and are a leading cause of PCB and motor failures. A basic voltage stabiliser (₹1,500–₹3,000) is excellent insurance for any washing machine.
