Washing Machine Leaking Water? Find & Fix the Source
A washing machine leak isn't just an inconvenience — it can damage your flooring, cabinets, and even seep to the flat below. Act quickly. Here's how to find the source and fix it.
Step 1: Identify When the Leak Occurs
- During fill: Inlet hose or valve issue
- During wash: Door gasket or tub seal
- During drain/spin: Drain hose or pump leak
- Always: Hose connections or cracked tub
Door Gasket Leak (Front Load)
Signs: Water pooling directly in front of the machine.
Cause: Torn, cracked, or mould-damaged door seal.
Fix: Gasket replacement is essential — ₹900–₹2,500. Do not continue using until fixed.
Inlet Hose Leak
Signs: Water dripping from behind the machine near the top.
Cause: Loose connection, cracked hose, or worn washer inside the fitting.
Fix: Tighten connections or replace the hose — inexpensive (₹200–₹600).
Drain Hose Leak
Signs: Water at the back/bottom, especially during drain cycle.
Cause: Loose drain hose clamp, cracked hose, or improper hose height.
Fix: Secure the hose clamp or replace the hose.
Pump Seal Leak
Signs: Water under the machine, often with noise from the pump area.
Cause: Worn pump seal or damaged pump housing.
Fix: Pump seal replacement or full pump replacement — ₹800–₹2,500.
Detergent Drawer Overflow
Signs: Water flowing from the detergent compartment area.
Cause: Too much detergent (excess foam), or blocked drawer drainage.
Fix: Clean drawer and cavity thoroughly. Use the correct amount of low-foam detergent.
Cracked Outer Tub
Signs: Significant water all around the machine.
Cause: Physical impact, age, or metal fatigue.
Fix: Tub replacement is expensive — often not economical for older machines. A technician can assess.
